To keep your car safe and performing at its best, it’s vital that you have your car serviced regularly. However, in between services there are a few things you can do yourself to help maintain your vehicle. Here is some helpful advice and simple checks to make on a regular basis:
Tyres are the key safety feature of your vehicle e.g. worn tyres could mean that your braking distance could increase by up to 70% on a wet road. The correct tyres, pressures and wear levels ensure that your vehicle performs correctly in all conditions.
Wear indicators in the tyre grooves will show you if the tread has reached the legal absolute minimum of 1.6mm. Standard summer tyres should be changed when the tread is lower than 3mm (78% worn). If the tread on your winter tyres is below 4mm they could lose grip when driving on snow.
Be aware of the correct tyre pressure and check your tyres at least every two weeks using a good quality gauge or garage airline.
Look for cuts on side walls. If a tyre needs regular top-ups it may have a slow puncture.
Don’t forget to check your spare tyre.
If you are unsure about the correct tyre pressure or are concerned about your tyre wear, the qualified technicians at Winslow Ford will be happy to give you free advice.
Check your owner’s manual for information on where to find the basic tool kit. It should contain at least a jack and wheel removal tools.
Familiarise yourself with the jacking points used to lift the car safely.
If locking wheel nuts are fitted, make sure the tool kit includes the key or removal tool.
If your vehicle does not carry a spare tyre, check the owner’s manual to find the tyre inflation kit.
Check the dipstick at least every two weeks and before long journeys.
Have the oil and filter changed at the recommended service intervals, using the recommended oil for your vehicle. You can find this information in your owner’s manual or the friendly service staff at Winslow Ford will be happy to advise you.
High oil consumption can indicate engine problems.
Check the coolant level regularly and top up as necessary – but only when the engine is cold.
Have the antifreeze concentration checked for winter.
Antifreeze not only prevents the coolant from freezing, it also prevents corrosion within the cooling system so is important all year round.
Wiper blades wear down over time and smear the windscreen.
Replace them at least once a year for maximum performance.
Check and top up regularly – under legal regulations your system must work.
Use a good screen wash additive throughout summer and winter – water alone won’t remove oily road grime and freezes more readily in winter.
Inspect your screen regularly for stone damage and always replace a cracked or chipped screen as soon as possible.
Damage may impair vision or distract your attention.
Minor chips can spread and crack the glass. Many chips and cracks can be repaired.
Check all your lights once a week. Don’t forget indicators, brake and fog lights.
Clean lights, regularly. In bad weather wipe them with a damp cloth.
Check the fluid reservoir once a month.
Top up using the appropriate hydraulic fluid only as advised in your owner’s manual. Winslow Ford are able supply the correct fluid you require.
What’s stopping you?
Worn brake pads and discs increase the time it takes your vehicle to stop.
Up to 50% worn – OK
51%-74% worn – Recommended replace
More than 75% worn – Must replace
Brakes ensure that your vehicle stops safely and quickly in all conditions. That’s why it’s vital you get your brakes checked regularly. The free eCHECK at Winslow Ford will ensure your brakes are performing safely and efficiently, if not our expert technicians will replace them at a price right for you.

Stay in touch every second you’re driving, with state-of-the-art Ford SYNC voice activated control and connectivity technology. It lets you make and take mobile phone calls, hands-free, using the simplest voice commands. It can even read out text messages you’ve been sent.
Likewise, you can control your music on your iPod or MP3 Player, just by using your voice. So, while Ford SYNC keeps you connected and entertained, you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
Emergency Assistance. Added Peace of Mind
An important and potentially life-saving part of Ford SYNC® is Emergency Assistance.
In the unlikely event of an accident, where the airbag is deployed or the fuel-pump is deactivated, the technology can help you make a direct call to the Emergency Services. Crucially, the system is designed to supply vital information, such as your GPS coordinates, in the event you do not know your location or you are not able to provide it yourself.*
Emergency Assistance has been recognised by Europe’s leading independent vehicle safety organisation, Euro NCAP, who awarded the technology their highly rated Advanced reward.
To see which SYNC features you can look forward to using with your particular mobile device, search using our Ford SYNC mobile phone compatibility portal.
*Ford Emergency Assistance operates in over 30 European countries. This feature works when paired with a compatible connected mobile phone that is with you when an airbag is deployed (excludes knee airbags) or a sensor that registers a crash deactivates the fuel pump. Text function and Emergency Assistance not supported by all European languages.

FORD ECOBOOST…PROOF THAT BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER
Size equals power, right? Well that’s the traditional way of thinking. EcoBoost is anything but traditional.
It’s a wholesale re-imagining of what an engine can do. These smaller, lighter engines feature many innovations that delivery great fuel economy and reduce emissions. Yet they don’t compromise on performance. No wonder the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine won International Engine of the Year three times in a row.
To an EcoBoost engine, every drop of fuel is precious. So precious that it reduces fuel consumption and makes a serious reduction in CO2 emissions – to as low as 99g/km. Detailed fuel consumption and CO2 emissions details are available on the car line pages listed below.
Direct injection helps EcoBoost engines achieve these remarkable figures. A precise, highly pressurised amount of fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This innovative and effective way of using fuel means EcoBoost engines use only the bare minimum amount of fuel needed.
Every EcoBoost engine features turbochargers for a power that far exceeds engine size. Turbocharging uses exhaust gases, which are usually wasted, to push more highly compressed air into the engine and give a huge boost to their power. A 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine can deliver an impressive performance up to 140PS, similar to an older, heavier 1.6 litre petrol engine.
The turbo also creates a great spread of torque (the power available to make the wheels turn). This makes EcoBoost engines flexible on open roads, with fewer gear changes needed. Variable cam timing helps generate high torque even at low revs, and maintains peak power. Or more simply: you get immediate, responsive power whenever you need to accelerate – such as overtaking a long, slow lorry.
INTELLIGENT ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
Available Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Transit
Confidence in changeable conditions
Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) monitors conditions to determine the amount of grip, cornering balance and responsiveness needed when the road (or terrain) is wet, dry or icy. It automatically sends extra power to the front or rear axle as and when needed, ensuring exceptional handling and improved efficiency at all times.
At low speeds the Intelligent AWD system concentrates on improving traction to support driveaway and manoeuvring on slippery surfaces, or at high torque levels. For instance, if the front wheels are on ice and the rear ones aren’t, Intelligent AWD sends extra torque to the rear, putting power where it’s needed. When you’re driving faster it moves the focus to delivering superb handling and a wonderfully responsive driving experience, while keeping an eye on traction. To do this it monitors the way you are driving and constantly fine-tunes itself.
